HOW WE WORK

We like to be transparent in everything we do,

read on to find out exactly how we work and how we charge.

Who We Work With

We can do something that takes 30 minutes to a year long, planned and staged project.  We have worked on jobs that generate $90 to $500,000 for electrical services.

We enjoy working with:

  • homeowners building their dream home,

  • investors building their portfolio,

  • commercial clients bringing goods and services to communities,

  • landholders securing our food production,

  • all of the essential services government agencies deliver.

We also enjoy the opportunity to support a range of events with specialised electrical requirements.

Requesting a Job

Requests can be made over phone, email or through our website contact us link.

To be set up as a new customer you will need to provide:

  • your name,

  • any business name,

  • phone number,

  • address for the work,

  • email for the invoice to be sent to

Photos can also be a great way to show us the problem or what you are wanting to do.  If you are unsure about the details of what we need to help you with, simply take a photo and send it through with the job request.

Helpful Information:

Other information you might be asked when requesting a job are things like:

How old is the building, wiring or switchboard?
This is us trying to work out if it might be old and if any work we do will require other electrical updates (it’s the law we are inspected against, not a choice we make or a money making venture)

Are there any other services near where you want the power point or light?
This is us trying to work out how simple it might be to get wiring to where you want something new.

What do you want to run with the power point and what else is on power points nearby?
This is us trying to consider if the power point could result in the circuit being overloaded and you then having a new electrical problem.  We are thinking is it a simple power point install or do we need to run a whole new circuit and get that back to the switchboard.

What were you using at the time?
This is us wondering if it might be the appliance you were using that led to a power outage, as opposed to there being anything wrong with your actual power.  We are also thinking were you trying to run too many appliances at the same time.

Is there access to the roof or underneath the flooring, is the building multiple stories and if so what level is the work on?
This is us thinking if we need to lift the tiles or roofing iron or if we can get in a manhole or go under an elevated floor to get access.  We are also thinking about the ladder we might need to bring for multiple story buildings or how we might try to get down an internal wall on the bottom story.

Where is the closest water point to where you want to put the power point or hanging pendant?
This is us thinking if the power point or pendant is far enough away from the vanity, kitchen sink, walk in shower or bath tub to ensure compliance.

Is the hotwater cylinder inside the building or outside?
This is us thinking if we might need to drain it before we can fix and therefore if a plumber is required to assist.

Compliance & Checking Work

Electrical work in Tasmania is randomly inspected by the regulatory body currently known as TechSafe.  Electricians are required under legislation to inform TechSafe of new installations undertaken so they can inspect them.

Through this process failure to ensure various elements of an installation are up to current standards can be identified.  This includes things such as needing to change from old cloth wiring to new, or from old fuses in a switchboard to safety switches and circuit breakers even though you might have only wanted an extra power point in the kitchen.

Failure by an electrician to ensure the full installation (including significant variations to existing works) completed by them is compliant with current standards can result in fines and loss of licence.

Our Methods of Charging

Quote

We can quote your request however to do this many aspects of the job must be clearly set out by you (accurate plans).  Your current level of electrical compliance must also be known to determine if any upgrade work is legally required by us.  You must also know the specific materials you wish (type of powerpoint or light fitting).  If items arise which should have been known prior to quote you may be charged extra.

Estimate

We can provide you with an estimate which is an indicative price or range based on the information known at the time.  Estimates allow you to change your mind as the work is undertaken and allow us to take into account the unforeseen.

Do and Charge

This is simply paying an hourly rate and the materials for the job.  Given the safety requirements for electrical work many tasks require an observer and therefore it is very common to have two people on a job.  In addition, it is often more efficient on jobs that require one person in a roof space or at heights to have another person on the ground.

As a long standing supporter of apprentices and growing future talent, we try to also manage this to be a benefit on to the customer of adjusted pricing for those jobs that require two people albeit not necessarily both fully qualified.

Sometimes it can also work better for our planning to send two qualified staff to a job and have it done in four hours rather than one person for eight hours.

There is a minimum one hour charge for each attendance.  Our hourly rate is the same for travel and therefore there are no further kilometre charges either.  We keep it simple.

Call Outs

Outside of Business Hours
(Monday to Friday 7.30am-5.30pm excluding public holidays)

We seek to provide the best service we can to all our current and prospective clients. We do not however provide a 24/7 guaranteed service.  We always try to respond to calls outside of our business hours.  In most instances we are able to mobilise one of our team to address any urgent needs.  Sometimes we can diagnose over the phone or will be able to work a solution out until we can attend in normal business hours.

Call outs are generally charged on the basis of a 3 hour block and at a slightly increased cost to account for increased wage cost.

Inside of Business Hours
(Monday to Friday 7.30am-5.30pm excluding public holidays)

Sometimes instances arise where clients require us to leave a job we are at to go and attend to an emergency.  Whilst we have a team to try and provide flexibility to adapt for unplanned work, where all staff are planned and at jobs and the request you are making can not wait until later in the day or the next day you may be charged a minimum 3 hour block.

Other pricing options you might have heard of

As a business we do not agree with retainer pricing and will not engage in this.  We are believers of you pay for what you get at the time you get it.

Likewise we do not charge on a per powerpoint or lighting point basis.  Whilst systems like that provide some certainty they are built on the basis of always being in the business owners favour.  Systems like this are built either on a worst case scenario or alternatively in the fine print you will find all the extras that could arise if it is not what might be deemed a standard job.  Again we prefer a fair and open charging model.
